MINUTE OF SIRENS

01 THE SIGNAL

One siren changes the meaning of the night.

One week before the Grand Final, after the preliminary-final crowd has left, the MCG begins the minute.

SOUND TRAVEL MEASUREMENTS

Siren sound levelReference sources place AFL siren levels at 90–105 decibels, measured as , around the oval, so we used ≈100 as the central planning level for an empty or recently emptied venue.

How sound travelsSound reduces as it travels. In open conditions, the sound level drops by about 6 dB each time the distance doubles. We then allow for buildings, traffic, stadium form, terrain and weather.

1 kmProminent audibility

5 kmProjected sound reach

We used 1 km and 5 km as the planning anchors, then adjusted the reach for the environment around each venue.
